If you want to see the desert the way the people from the Gobi do, by exploring the desert while sitting on the back of a Bactrian camel then this trip is perfect for you. This trip not only discovers the wonders and hidden corners of the Gobi, but also you can get a sense of how the desert people live in this vast inhospitable area.

On this trip we will pass through the ruins of Ongiin Khiid Monastry and ride along the tiny little river cutting this massive in two equal parts, reach Bayanzag where dinosaur bones and eggs were found and trek with your camels along the impressive Mongol Els sand dunes. This amazing trip brings you to the limit of human living conditions.

Holiday Itinerary



Arrival Ulaanbaatar, Bogd Khan's Winter Palace, Monastery of Choiji Lama
Upon arrival at the airport we will be welcomed by your guide and transfer to hotel.In the afternoon we will visit the Bogd Khan's Winter Palace, a series of beautiful traditional buildings in which the eighth Living Buddha and the last king lived. It is now a museum displaying fascinating artifacts and costumes associated with the last king as well as his collection of stuffed animals.

Rock climbing in Middle Gobi (220km)
We will start our tour heading to the Middle Gobi. Middle Gobi is semi-arid steppe where you may encounter medical herbs, rare animals such as wild sheep, ibex, antelope, black tailed antelope, marmot, fox, lynx, wild cat, badger and birds include eagle, kite, swan and sand grouse. After a few hours driving to the south of Ulaanbaatar, we will have lunch in mountainside called Zorgol Khairkhan which is a granite rock formation, 1600m high above sea level and one of the beautiful mountains in the Gobi. We will arrive in Baga Gazriin Chuluu passing by small Lake Hairhan. Baga gazriin chuluu is one of the granite rock formations where large granite pinnacles and windings canyons. We will spend our first overnight staying with a nomadic family living in the steppe zone and experience a bit taste of their nomadic lifestyle.

Limestone cliff Tsagaan suvarga (280km)
Tsagaan suvarga is an area of 30-m high white limestone formations and a beautiful part of the desert. We will drive to a set of eroded limestone cliffs, from where you have the fantastic view over the desert floor down below, which bore colors from white and yellow to pink and deep red. We will stay with a nomadic family there.

Hiking in Ice Valley called Yolyn Am (280 km)
Our today’s destination is Vulture Valley (Yoliin Am), a valley in the middle of the Gobi Desert, with meters-thick ice for most of the year. We will have breathtaking cool air through hiking in the valley following the stream, leads to an ice-filled gorge, about 2kms. In the entrance, we will visit the small museum of a collection of dinosaur eggs and bones, stuffed birds and snow leopard.

The longest singing sand dune Khongor (200km)
After breakfast, we will leave Vulture valley heading to Khongor Sand Dune. Empty steppe where lies many branches of road, the mirage of the Gobi, the distances between Gers are a common view of very Southern Mongolia. We will have lunch on the way. Khongor sand dunes are some of the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in Mongolia. They are up to 300m high, 12 kms wide and about 180kms long. Gobi desert in Mongolia is unlike Sahara there are green grasslands, oasis and grazers. The climate here is extreme. Temperatures reach +40° C at highest in summer, and -40 in winter. Khongor sand dune is in the Great Gobi National which contains the last remaining wild Bacterian (two-humped) camels, wild ass, and a small population of Gobi bears, the only desert-inhabiting bears.

Land of dinosaur Bayanzag (150km)
Today, our destination is Bayanzag known as Flamming cliff where first excavated in 1922, renowned worldwide for a number of dinosaur bones and eggs found. It is a classic desert of rock, red sands, scrub, sun and awesome emptiness. Gobi always amazes people with its emptiness and feeling midst of nowhere. We will ride the camel to discover the red cliff.

Secret of Ongi monastery (150km)
Today, we will drive to Ongi monastery, the unique 17th century sole monastery at the heart of the desert. Formerly, Ongi was one of the biggest Buddhist monasteries where around thousand lamas used to stay and learn from Buddhism. Unfortunately, the monastery was ruined during political repression 1937-1939.The ruin of the monastery signs spread of strong Buddhism into Mongolians under Chinese rule and political repression under socialist rule impacted by the Soviet Union in Mongolia. The vast majority of the more than 700 monasteries in Mongolia was also destroyed and around 25000 lamas killed during the political repression in Mongolia. We will hike exploring the ruin of the monastery which is located in the east Shore of Ongi River.

Ruin of the ancient capital Karakorum and Erdenezuu monastery (300km)
Drive to Karakorum, the site of the 13th century Mongolian empire’s capital, founded by Chinggis Khan. However, Kharakhorum served as the capital for only 40 years before Kublai khan moved to nowadays Beejin. A visit to the ruins and Erdenezuu Monastery, first and biggest Buddhist monastery of 16th century surrounded by 400m x 400m walls built from the ruins of the ancient capital.

Ulaanbaatar (370km)
Today we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar city. The tour will end back at your hotel or private accommodation.
