The Baltoro and other glaciers of the Karakoram are the largest and longest in the world outside the polar region. From its spectacular birthplace in Concordia, at the base of K-2 and the gasherbrum range, the Baltoro Glacier flows for more than 59 kilometers, a rippling, pitted, pockmarked river of ice, where great glaciers slide and slither togather before separating to go their diffrent ways. Like a proscenium, Concordia is part of the main stage of natural amphitheatre that has no equal. On every side, within a distance of 24 kilometers, rise up ten of the world’s highest peaks.
