Festival Overview
The Chilam Joshi Festival, also called Chilimjusht, Chilim Jhust, or the Kalash Spring Festival, is one of the most awaited events in the Kalash Valley. The Kalasha community celebrates this festival to express reverence for their gods, welcoming spring with gratitude and seeking their deities’ blessings. Every year, tourists from around the globe time their visits to experience this colorful cultural extravaganza. We are proud to arrange guided tours to Kalash Valley, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in this extraordinary celebration.
A central theme of the Chilam Joshi Festival is the pursuit of purity. In preparation for the arrival of the Balomain (mythical spirits), the Kalasha people undergo spiritual and physical cleansing. A week before the festivities, participants take ritual baths. During purification rites, men follow strict traditions—they avoid sitting during the day, and at night, goat’s blood is sprinkled on their faces. Another unique custom is the men’s involvement in cooking, where they prepare special bread distributed across Kalash’s three valleys.
The festival is a vibrant celebration filled with music and dance. Young men and women dance together, often finding their life partners during the festivities. At the conclusion of the event, couples publicly declare their relationships, adding to the jubilant atmosphere.
