The Biafo-Hispar Glaciers Traverse (Snow Lake Trek)

So what’s next after the iconic K2 Base Camp Trek? For those craving an even more remote and jaw-dropping adventure in Pakistan’s Karakoram, the Snow Lake Trek (also known as the Biafo-Hispar Glaciers Traverse) stands unmatched. This epic 100+ km journey follows two of the world’s longest glaciers outside the polar regions – the mighty Biafo Glacier (67 km) and the Hispar Glacier (49 km) – connected by the dramatic Hispar La pass at 5,150 m.

Snow Lake itself, or Lukpe Lawo, is a breathtaking high-altitude glacial basin over 16 km wide at the head of the Biafo Glacier. Formed by four tributary glaciers, it creates a surreal “lake” of ice and snow surrounded by towering peaks like Baintha Brakk (The Ogre, 7,285 m) and other giants of the Karakoram. This isn’t just another trek; it’s a true traverse of one of the most isolated wilderness areas on Earth.

I completed this strenuous but incredibly rewarding trek on July 17, 2025, with Snowland Treks and Tours Pakistan. After years of dreaming about Pakistan’s high mountains and having done the K2 Base Camp trek previously, Snow Lake was the natural next step. The experience exceeded every expectation, thanks to Snowland’s flawless organization.

Why Snow Lake Trek is Truly Unique

Three standout features make this trek legendary:

  1. Ascending the upper reaches of the Biafo Glacier to Hispar La.
  2. Crossing the Biafo-Hispar ice divide at 5,150 m.
  3. Descending the entire length of the Hispar Glacier to the picturesque Hispar village in Hunza Valley.

The route offers constant jaw-dropping views of 7,000 m and 8,000 m peaks, vast ice fields, turquoise meltwater ponds and ice formations that look like sculptures from another planet. With fewer than 200 trekkers attempting it annually, you’ll feel like you have the entire Karakoram to yourself.

Challenges & Honest Assessment

Make no mistake – this is a strenuous trek. Even experienced trekkers who have completed K2 Base Camp will find it demanding. Expect long days (6-8 hours) on rough moraine, off-trail glacier travel, potential crevasse navigation, and high-altitude camping in unpredictable weather. The middle section is completely off-grid for 5-6 days with no villages or rescue options – true wilderness immersion.

Weather can change rapidly; buffer days are essential. Altitude reaches 5,150 m, so proper acclimatization is critical. The trek is not technical (no climbing gear required), but good fitness, sturdy boots, and mental resilience are non-negotiable.

Snowland Treks Made It Perfect

I chose Snowland because of their 22+ years specializing in Karakoram adventures and their outstanding reputation for the Snowlake and Hispar La Trek. Their team handled everything flawlessly:

  • Highly experienced Balti guides and porters who know every crevasse on the Biafo and Hispar.
  • Excellent camp setup with comfortable sleeping tents, mess tent, and delicious hot meals even at 4,800 m.
  • Satellite phone communication for emergencies.
  • Flexible itinerary adjustments based on weather.
  • Better value than many international operators while maintaining top safety standards.

From airport pickup in Islamabad to the final jeep ride from Hispar village, every detail was taken care of. The porters were incredibly strong and cheerful, and our guide shared fascinating local stories every evening.

Detailed Route Overview

The full adventure is typically 20-22 days… including travel days. Here’s a condensed trekking itinerary (13 trekking days):

  • Day 1-3: Islamabad → Skardu → Askoli (3,000 m) – acclimatization and jeep transfers.
  • Day 4: Askoli to Namla (3,566 m) – 6 hours, first steps onto Biafo Glacier.
  • Day 5: Namla to Marfogoro (4,300 m).
  • Day 6: Marfogoro to Karphogoro (4,680 m) – entering deeper glacier terrain.
  • Day 7: Karphogoro to Hispar La Base Camp (4,590 m).
  • Day 8: Rest/acclimatization day or push to Snow Lake (4,800 m).
  • Day 9: Cross Snow Lake and summit Hispar La (5,150 m) – the highlight!
  • Day 10: Descend to Kani Basa (4,511 m) on the Hispar Glacier side.
  • Day 11-13: Continue down Hispar Glacier through stunning side valleys to Hispar village (3,400 m).
  • Day 14: Jeep to Karimabad (Hunza) for celebration.

The route covers approximately 116 km of glacier travel with significant elevation gain/loss.

My Personal Highlights

  • Camping on the edge of Snow Lake under a blanket of stars.
  • The sunrise at Hispar La with 360° views of the entire glacier system and distant 8,000 m peaks.
  • Watching our porters navigate the glacier with incredible skill and smiles.
  • The moment we descended into the green Hunza Valley after two weeks of pure ice and rock – the contrast is unforgettable.

The sense of accomplishment crossing from Baltistan into Hunza via this ancient glacial highway is something I’ll treasure forever.
